PICADILLY - Drew McCafferty of the Moncton Golf Club has claimed his first Nike Golf NB Mid-Amateur Championship.

He grinded out a final round 72, leaving him at 5 for the championship, good enough for a two-shot victory over five other players in the field at the Sussex Golf and Curling Club.

McCafferty had a strong start with two birdies on the front, making the turn at one-under-par 35. He followed with a birdie on the 10th hole. After a double bogey on the 14th hole, McCafferty finished strong with a birdie on the 420-yard, 17th.

Friday, McCafferty, who was actually one-day shy of his 25th birthday, became the youngest player to win the Nike Golf NB Mid-Amateur Championship. He is eligible because of the Aug. 18 age deadline which coincides with the first round of the Canadian Mid-Amateur Championship.

Also determined was the New Brunswick mid-amateur team of four players who will be traveling to the 2008 Canadian Mid-Amateur Championship at the Pheasant Glenn Golf Resort in Qualicum, B.C., Aug. 18-22. This team competition requirements are such that at least two members of each provincial team must have reached the age of 40.

The five-way tie for second place resulted in a three-hole playoff for the three final team spots. After the action was finished, Edward Reevey from the Riverside Country Club, Dale Kinnie from the Moncton Golf and Country Club, and Tony MacKinnon from the Fredericton Golf Club were the three others who came out with the opportunity to represent New Brunswick at the national championship.

In the playoff, Reevey began with a par and a bogey, but hit two beautiful shots on the 18th and tapped in a short putt for birdie, leaving him at even par. Reevey earned a spot in the playoff by posting a four-under par 68 on Friday, the lowest round by any player this week. Kinnie also began with a par and a bogey and he drained a 15-footer on the 18th green for his par, which left him at 1.

Gary Melanson actually finished in a team position at the end of the playoff, but Melanson is unable to attend the Canadian Mid-Amateur Championship and as a result, MacKinnon became the fourth team member. Fredericton's Adam Atkinson, who also took part in the playoff, finds himself in the alternate position for the team.

Paul Stackhouse from the Hampton Golf Club claimed the overall net championship, finishing with a net one-under-par 215. Stackhouse was also the third division gross champion with 245.

In the second division, Michael Graham from the NBGA Public Players Club ended in a tie for first with Jamie Thibault from the Moncton Golf and Country Club after the pair both closed with 15-over-par 231's.
