Provincial mid-amateur tourney starts Wednesday

Sussex Golf & Curling Club
Summer is officially here and it was toasted by Jim Stevenson on Friday night during our Nine and Dine. Fifty-four golfers played and 60 dined on a very nice meal of seafood lasagna prepared by our very own Jayne.
The winners were the team of Mike and Anne Swift, Candace Jeffrey and Byron Barton. There were prizes for everyone. Walter Riedle celebrated his 39th birthday and holding at the dinner. Ken played dinner for the crowd. The next event is in August.
Congratulations to four of our ladies who attended a field day at Magnetic Hill Golf Club and three came away winners. Elva MacLean won low gross in the fourth division. Lois Sherwood won third low gross in third division and Marilyn Donovan won low net in her division.
The Nike Golf New Brunswick Mid-Amateur Championship runs June 25-27. There are 54 golfers (25 years and older) entered from every part of the province. Club pro Brent McKay needs some volunteers to help with starting, scoring, and forecaddies. If you have the time please call him at the pro shop, 433-4951. The course will reopen for play around noon each day. If you would like to watch some good golf, come to the course between 7:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. The kitchen will be open at 6:30 a.m. each morning.
The seniors are on the road this week. They will travel to Fredericton Golf and Country Club June 26. If you plan on going, contact Gordie McKay. The fee is $25, which includes golf, dinner and prizes.
School is out and the junior program begins July 3. Juniors must register by June 30 for the clinics. The fee is $35 for members and $75 for non members. All juniors should be at the first clinic 9 a.m July 3. Brent will at that time divide the classes into groups by their ability. Please call the pro shop to register.
The Monday night ladies league has completed three weeks of play and the team of Barb Dempster and Sally Kwong lead with six points.
The Tuesday night men's league has 75 teams. The leaders up to June 10 are: First division, Jim Murray and Maurice Mazerolle; second division, Des McCarthy and Ken Taylor; and third division, Byron Barton and Gale Jeffrey.
Member guest day is slated for June 29. This is an event for members to bring out guests at no cost. This event replaces the green fee tag you received with your membership in past years. The barbeque pit will be open from 11 a.m to 5 p.m. Hot dogs and hamburgers will be served free of charge. It's a good way to show off our facility and encourage new members.
Our guests or green fee players who play our course tell us how lucky we are to have such a facility at reasonable prices. Maybe we, the members, should become ambassadors for our club. Have a great week. See you next week.
