Six injured, one dead in two weekend collisions

WARDS CREEK Police believe alcohol was a factor in two serious collisions on the weekend, one of which was fatal.

Shana Berryman, 19, of Belleisle died as a result of a single vehicle collision Sunday morning between 2 and 3 a.m. It occurred on the Wards Creek Road just a few feet from the town limits.

"It went off the road and rolled over," said RCMP Cpl. Graham Milner of the 2008 Pontiac. "The 19-year-old in the back seat died at the scene."

There were two males and two females in the vehicle, all between the ages of 19 and 22. He said at this point, it is unknown whether seatbelts were in use. The driver and the two other passengers received minor injuries, were taken to hospital and by Sunday afternoon, he believed they had been released.

Two reconstructionists were at the scene for several hours and the road was closed until late Sunday morning.

Police were busy through the early morning hours Saturday after a head-on collision between a half-ton truck and a car on the Picadilly Road near the Post Road intersection.

"Alcohol was involved in that one as well," said Milner.

The Saturday collision took place at 1:30 a.m. injuring the two teenagers in the car and more seriously injuring the 25-year-old man driving the truck, although by Saturday evening, all three had been released from hospital.

Collision reconstructionist Cpl. Rick Younker was on the scene for several hours, and the road was closed all night.

The two incidents are still under investigation, with the possibility of charges in both cases, said Milner.

In the case of the fatal collision, Cpl. Phil Oliver said Monday police were considering an "impaired charge and a [Breathalyzer] refusal."
