SUSSEX -

Residents of Sussex, Sussex Corner, Norton and surrounding local service districts will be treated to a waste free-haul night here next month.

It's an opportunity to get rid of large items such as furniture, appliances and other materials not normally picked up by the weekly garbage removal service.

The Kings County Region Solid Waste Commission is hosting the four-hour free-haul night at the Sussex waste transfer station on McLeod Drive from 4-8 p.m. Oct. 9.

"This is something new this year," said KCRSWC representative Ann-Marie Snyder.

Normally there is a tipping fee for large items, scrap materials and lawn and garden waste brought to the transfer station. Until this event, the only other alternative to paying the tipping fee at the station for to get rid of bulky waste was to wait until the annual curbside spring and fall clean-up days.

This year the Town of Sussex announced it will no longer pick up non-household compostable materials (grass clippings, lawn and garden waste, leaves, shrubs, branches and tree parts) after Oct. 24. These items can be left out for pick-up during fall clean-up days in October but after that, residents must make arrangements to have all compostable materials transported to the compost facility on McLeod Drive.

Fall clean-up days this year are Tuesday, Oct. 21 for the west (Gateway Mall) side of the railway tracks and Wednesday, Oct. 22 for the east (Sussex Mall) side of the tracks.

The KCRSWC is also hosting a collection day for household hazardous waste and electronic waste at the Sussex transfer station Saturday, Oct. 25 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The organization received funding through the Environmental Trust Fund for Greening in Kings County projects, including $25,000 for a battery recycling program and $30,000 for the second phase of a project to clean up illegal dumping sites in the region. During the first phase last year, the commission cleaned up seven sites.

"We're asking people if they know of an illegal dump site to give us a call," said Snyder.

They ask callers to leave detailed directions to the site and preferably contact information in case clean-up volunteers can't find the reported site. Callers can report illegal dump sites to the New Brunswick Solid Waste Association hotline at 1-877-777-4218.
