New council convenes

Many new faces were present at the June 11 meeting of Sussex Corner council, with the first appearance of councillors Pat Pearson, Ben Whalen, Stephen Gillies, and Deputy Mayor John Mahoney. Returning to council was Arie Ruitenberg, and after a four-year absence, Mayor Eric Cunningham. Many visitors and presenters offered their congratulations to the group.

During their first meeting, they gave away some money and entertained a request for more. The village agreed to a sponsorship in kind of $150 for the National Dog Agility Championship scheduled for Sussex in August.

They also listened to a presentation from the Fundy Civic Centre on the launch of their major fundraising campaign, which will require $3 million in order for the pool complex to be built. The group is visiting local groups and municipalities to solicit funding for the $6 million pool, which has been more than a decade in the planning and after more than 25 years of discussion. About $2.7 million in federal and provincial funding as been secured, and the local campaign has raised $800,000 so far.

The invitation to tender for initial site preparation next to the Gateway Towers apartments will be announced soon.

New night

Council approved first and second reading of a bylaw that would change the meeting night of council. The group has met on the second Wednesday of the month for some time, but when third reading takes place, the meeting time will change to the second Tuesday of each month, beginning July 8.

Appointments

Councillor Pat Pearson will represent the village at the Sussex & District Chamber of Commerce, the Kings East Development Partnership and the Fundy Civic Centre. Councillor Ben Whalen will be the village representative on the Kings County Region Solid Waste Commission and Sussex & District Minor Baseball Association. Councillor Arie Ruitenberg will once again represent the village on the Royal District Planning Commission and the Kennebecasis Watershed Committee.

Deputy Mayor John Mahoney is the new chair of the Operations Committee. Councillor Stephen Gillies will join the RCMP Policing Advisory Committee on the village's behalf. Mayor Eric Cunningham will join the village's Personnel Committee and represent the village on Zone 3 of the Union of Municipalities of New Brunswick and the Emergency Measures Organization.

RCMP report

Cpl. Phil Oliver addressed council with his monthly report and brought with him Tanya Warren, community programs officer for the District 3 RCMP. Her role is to work with youths and seniors on crime prevention, safety and other initiatives.

During May, the RCMP responded to nine calls within village limits, including one traffic collision, a report of open liquor, a false 911 call, two rowdy youths exhibiting intoxicated behaviour, and one mischief incident.

Mayor Eric Cunningham asked Oliver about whether Neighbourhood Watch is still active in the area. Oliver will return in July with a report on Neighbourhood Watch, plus stats on the service the RCMP provides the village, at Deputy Mayor John Mahoney's request.
