SUSSEX -

The committee behind the Fundy Civic Centre says Sussex area residents should feel optimistic about having an indoor pool complex built here in the near future.

The FCC kicked off its fundraising campaign Sept. 30 at the Sussex Elementary School. A fundraising progress thermometer revealed the campaign started on the right foot.

"We are very close to the goal we wanted for the start of the campaign," said John Robinson, chair of the fundraising campaign. "We came only $42,000 short of our $1.2 million goal."

Different representatives from all levels of government were at the event. They all expressed their gratefulness for the funds received and expressed their support and excitement in having a multi-purpose facility that will serve all kinds of people in the community.

Among those attending were Fundy Royal MP Rob Moore, Minister of Human Resources Wally Stiles, Kings East MLA Bruce Northrup, Deputy Mayor Marc Thorne, and Wendy Alcorn, mayor of Norton.

David Medders, chairman of the board of directors for the FCC and president of the Bethany Bible College, was also enthusiastic about the progress so far.

"I want to salute community leaders who consistently wanted to be part of this," he said. "Tonight we witness what people can do together and that would have been impossible for only a few to achieve."

Robinson urged people and businesses to get involved in the different initiatives of fundraising. He also mentioned the Rotary Club will be distributing collection jars in the area.

"The idea is getting everyone involved," he said, "that even children can deposit their change and feel they have contributed to it."

Robinson reminded people the FCC is not only for the next generation, but for everyone in the community such as children, youth and seniors. The $6 million facility, which is expected to be completed by December 2009, will boast two indoor pools, a fitness centre, an indoor walking track and community room.
